PORT OF Spain North/St Ann's West MP John Rahael, who shocked the nation by bowing out of this year's general election, may have riled many doctors during his term as Health Minister, but at least one doctor has given him an "A" grade.
Dr Anand Chatoorgoon, acting Medical Director at the San Fernando General Hospital, said yesterday that Rahael's announcement had left him "sad and crying, because I shall truly miss this man".
"He is the best Minister of Health I have known, and he tried very hard indeed, and in my view succeeded, in improving the health service to the people," he said.
Chatoorgoon said while much needed to be done in the health sector, "he is the best man for the job".
"His attitude has been one of providing quality service to the poor people who come to our hospitals, and he has sought to do that by providing services in terms of equipment and drugs and impressing upon attendants and nurses and doctors of the need to be caring and compassionate towards patients."
Chatoorgoon said that at the San Fernando General Hospital, "Minister Rahael had increased the number of beds, improved our haemodialysis service for kidney patients and provided more surgeries for patients". "He will be a difficult act to follow," he added.
