Some schools are ready for Monday’s reopening, but work is still taking place at others, a statement from the Education Ministry indicated.
Education Minister Hazel Manning and a team of senior ministry officials, including school supervisors, met earlier this week with representatives of agencies responsible for project-mamaging the 2007 School Repair Programme.
This includes the National Maintenance Training and Security Co (MTS) and the National Insurance Property Development Company (Nipdec).
Project management consultants advised that upgrade and repair works intensified this week at some schools.
The statement noted that while repairs have been completed at several schools which are ready for reopening on Monday, the project managers admitted that several contractors mobilised their work teams later than scheduled.
“Contractors engaged in the repair of school sewer systems reported that at some schools, the sewer facilities were overwhelmed with plastic bottles and other debris,” the statement also noted.
An appeal was made for school principals to monitor the use of bathrooms and toilets.
School supervisers reported that at many schools they observed structural improvements including the replacement of defective floors and walls, atttention to environemntal concerns, upgrading of recreational grounds and provision of new furniture and equipment.
During this year’s ongoing school repair programme, Nipde, MTS and the Educational Facilities Co are engaged in improving conditions at a record 281primary and secondary schools at a cost of approximately $123 million.
