Pundit says MP cursed him

Pundit Ramlakan said:
The MP told him: “Your mother c!!!.”
He immediately got up and told police that Achong had cussed him.
“His mouth was stink of rum... so stink of rum that I almost get drunk.”

DAY one of the obscene language case against Point Fortin Member of Parliament Larry Achong got off to a heated start yesterday.

The State’s two main witnesses—Pundit Ganga Ramlakan and the complainant in the matter Insp Deonarine Basdeo—took the witness stand.

Ramlakan, a pundit for the past 30 years, was forced to repeat the alleged cuss words approximately seven times during his testimony, as he recalled the November 9, 2006, anti-smelter meeting at Chatham Youth Camp, where it is alleged Achong cussed him.

From as early as 8 am yesterday, People’s National Movement supporters began gathering outside Point Fortin Magistrates’ Court to lend support to their MP.

Around 9 am, Achong, accompanied by his common-law wife, chief executive officer of San Fernando City Corporation Marlene Coudray, arrived.

Flanked by several PNMites as he made his way into the courtroom, there were shouts of: “We support you.”

Minutes later, Ramlakan, dressed in a yellow and white dhoti, arrived in court with State attorney Quincy Marshall.

As Achong waited for his matter to be called, a man who was arrested over the weekend—after police officers overheard him cussing on his cellphone—was fined $200 for the offence.
In default he would serve 30 days in prison.

At around 9.30 am, Magistrate Siumongal Ramsaran, presiding in the Second Court, called the matter, but it was quickly stood down for one hour after both the State and defence team, led by Osbourne Charles, SC, indicated that they were ready to proceed.

When the matter was recalled, Ramlakan took the witness stand. His 25-minute testimony caused eyebrows to raise and several murmurs were heard echoing throughout the courtroom.
The court heard that around 6.30 pm on November 9, 2006, Ramlakan was at the anti-smelter meeting in Chatham when Achong arrived.

Ramlakan said he was sitting in the second row of the meeting approximately three feet from Achong and was shouting: “No smelter... No smelter.”

Achong, Ramlakan said, turned around to him and gesticulated for him to come forward.
When he did so, he told the court that the MP told him: “Your mother c!!!”
